Greyhounds Early Start Leads to Friday Victory in Flint

Flint, Mich. – Despite the game being separated by only one goal 5:30 into the final period, the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds earned a 5-2 victory with an empty net tally at the Dort Federal Event Center Friday evening.
The Greyhounds scored the first goal of the contest 5:14 into the opening period. Bobby MacIntyre lined a pass to Jack Kopacka who found twine from the left circle off Kyle Keyser’s shoulder to give the Greyhounds a 1-0 lead.
Morgan Frost then increased the Greyhounds lead to two goals at 15:12. As the Greyhounds’ power play expired, Connor Timmins sent a shot on net to Keyser. Keyser denied the first shot before Frost scored a top-shelf goal from the left circle on the rebound.
After the first period, Blake Speers scored the Greyhounds third goal of the game on the power play. Gustav Bouramman dished the puck to Speers at the point before Speers earned the three-goal lead by ripping the puck off the back-bar.
The Firebirds scored their first goal of the evening as a Greyhounds power play expired in the second period. With 1:19 remaining, Zach Grzelewski passed the puck to a streaking Mathieu Henderson at the left circle. Henderson scored his second goal in the two games against the Greyhounds shortside past Joseph Raaymakers.
The Flint Firebirds made the game interesting scoring 5:32 into the third period to make it a one-goal game. Defenseman Alex Peters launched a missile pass to Grzelewski at the Greyhounds’ blue line. While on a breakaway, Grzelewski scored blocker side past Raaymakers for his eighth goal of the season.
Sault Ste. Marie responded 3:33 later when Gustav Bouramman scored glove-side to increase their lead to two goals again. Finally, Colton White added the empty net goal with 1:36 left in the game.
Flint’s Kyle Keyser recorded the loss between-the-pipes recording 23 saves on 27 Greyhound shots. The Firebirds were scoreless through two tries on the power play and were one-for-four on the penalty kill. Zach Grzelewski picked up the third star of the game.
The Firebirds will host the Windsor Spitfires Saturday night for the 3rd and final time this season. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m. (EST) at the Dort Federal Event Center.
Saturday is United Way and the United Automobile Workers (UAW) Night. Prior to the Firebirds’ game, members from the United Way and the UAW will square off on the ice for a friendly match. Then, during the Firebirds’ game, there will be a silent auction for both the UAW and United Way team jerseys to raise money for the United Way, which is the leadership and support organization for a network of nearly 1,800 community-based United Ways in 45 countries and territories.
