Flint, Mich. – The Flint Firebirds officially unveiled the 2015-16 inaugural season schedule in conjunction with the release of the Ontario Hockey League’s (OHL) 20-team composite schedule by the league office on Thursday.
A home-and-home series against the Saginaw Spirit in late September will launch the Flint Firebirds first season in the OHL. The puck will drop on the 68-game campaign on Thursday, September 24th at the Dow Event Center when the Flint Firebirds and the Saginaw Spirit begin an anticipated long-standing rivalry. Flint will then host Saginaw in the Firebirds home-opening game on Saturday, September 26th with puck drop slated for 7:30 p.m. (ET) at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center.
Most notably, 18 of the 34 home games this season at the Dort Federal Credit Union Event Center will take place on Saturday nights, giving Firebirds fans one of the most accommodating schedules in the Ontario Hockey League. Of note, the 2015 Memorial Cup Champions, Oshawa Generals, will visit Flint on Sunday, November 8th for a 5 p.m. (ET) tilt.
Fans will have the opportunity to see every member of the 20-team league as each club will visit Flint for a minimum of one time throughout the regular season. Likewise, the Firebirds will play in every OHL city at least once throughout the 2015-16 campaign.
Firebirds team President Costa Papista stated, “We could not be more excited about our inaugural OHL schedule. We literally play 26 of our 34 home games on non-school nights. This allows us to truly accommodate families and our younger fans. By design, our schedule avoids the majority of Genesee County high school football Friday night games. We are hopeful that the community will embrace Saturday night as hockey night in Flint and Genesee County.”
Flint will have many opportunities to get acquainted with the other four West Division members, as the Firebirds will faceoff against the Saginaw Spirit and Sarnia Sting eight times each this season including six games each against the Windsor Spitfires and Soo Greyhounds. The Firebirds will battle against the five remaining Western Conference members four times each and will also play both one game at home and one contest on the road vs. the 10 Eastern Conference clubs.
Individual game tickets will go on sale on Friday, August 7th at 10 a.m. (ET). The complete schedule of the Flint Firebirds 2015-16 inaugural season in the Ontario Hockey League can be found online at www.FlintFirebirds.com.
