Sarnia Wins Saturday Night Tilt in Flint

Flint, Mich. – Travis Konecny scored twice and Matt Mistele recorded two assists in a 5-2 victory over the Firebirds before 3,779 fans at the Dort Federal Event Center on Saturday night.

Konecny started the scoring off for the Sting, finding the back of the net on Sarnia’s first shot of the contest from the right circle, far side past Brent Moran’s blocker 58 seconds into the game.

Then, as Mathieu Henderson’s penalty expired in the first period, Francesco Vilardi dished the puck to Henderson for a breakaway who scored five-hole past Justin Fazio to tie the score 1-1.

Travis Konecny scored his second goal of the game at 14:29 of the opening frame when Ryan McGregor found Konecny from below the goal line at the right side of the cage. Konecny found an opening for the go ahead goal.

2:56 into the second period, Jacob Chychryn wrapped the puck around the net, Moran made back-to-back saves before Sam Studnicka found the rebound for Sarnia’s first power play tally of the evening.

Then, Matt Mistele dished the puck to Pavel Zacha at the right circle who scored off the right post and into the net for Sarnia’s fourth goal and second power play lamplighter.

Flint’s Vili Saarijärvi recorded his fourth point in two games against the Sting, scoring from the left circle past Fazio at 6:49 of the middle period.

Jordan Kyrou increased the Sting’s lead to three, adding the final goal of the game with 2:56 remaining in the middle frame.

Flint’s Matt Menna relieved Moran after the second period and made all 10 saves on Sarnia’s 10 shots.

Next up for Flint, the Firebirds will travel to Saginaw for a Wednesday night contest against the Sprit. Puck drop is set for 7:05 p.m. at the Dow Event Center.
