CoverageThe Flint Firebirds are searching for a radio and TV color commentator and an in-studio radio host for the 2019-20 season beginning Mid-September. This is a full-season opportunity for you to expand your broadcast experience in a major junior hockey setting while networking with others in a similar field.

Recognized as a leader in television coverage, the OHL is the only hockey league outside the NHL that has its own live television subscription package. OHL fans in Ontario have the opportunity to add the “OHL Action Pak” to their television subscription to watch almost every OHL game on TV, home and away, throughout the season, similar to the NHL Center Ice and MLB Extra Innings TV packages. During the 2018-19 season, 65 of the 68 Flint Firebirds games had live television coverage. All 68 regular season home and away games, including playoffs, can be heard live on 103.1 FM WQUS in Flint & Genesee County.

This person will need to be comfortable on a microphone and have vast hockey knowledge, preferably a former player. In addition, this person must have a professional appearance and be able to create good relationships with NHL scouts, media staff, players, hockey operations staff and visiting broadcasters/media members. This position will directly report to the Director of Broadcasting & Communications, Jack Sznewajs.

 


 

Color Commentator Responsibilities:

  • Have extensive knowledge of the sport of hockey, preferably a former player.
  • Attend all 34 Flint Firebirds home games and select road games
  • Be able to hold a conversation on live radio and television
  • Work with the play-by-play broadcaster to conduct a professional hockey broadcast
  • Hold dialogue during the 35 minute pregame and postgame shows, including the intermissions.
  • Develop relationships with media members and visiting broadcasters.

Qualifications:

  • Must be able to work all 34 home Flint Firebirds games
  • Must have experience in playing hockey
  • Broadcasting experience recommended
  • Must have a positive and great attitude.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Professional appearance and attitude
  • Must have own transportation to assigned events

In-Studio Radio Host Responsibilities:

  • Have extensive knowledge of the sport of hockey, preferably a former player.
  • Be available for all 68 Flint Firebirds’ games, location at Cumulus Broadcasting Studios in Grand Blanc, Mich.
  • Watch all Flint Firebirds games live on TV/Internet to develop knowledge of current game
  • Host two segments in each pregame, intermission and postgame show
  • Listen for and cut highlights during game for playback during intermissions and postgame shows.
  • Be able to hold a conversation on live radio

Qualifications:

  • Must be available in studio for all 68 Flint Firebirds games
  • Must have experience in radio broadcasting
  • Must have a positive and great attitude.
  • Must be able to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision.
  • Professional appearance and attitude
  • Must have own transportation to assigned events
