Peterborough, Ont. – Matyas Kantner scored his first career OHL goal and Matthew Menna saw his first action between the pipes in a 6-1 deficit to the Peterborough Petes on Thursday night.
After Flint’s Brent Moran made back-to-back breakaway saves, Flint started the scoring off 6:54 seconds into the game when Kantner deflected a shot from Alex Peters into the back of the cage to earn the Firebirds a 1-0 lead.
While on the power play, Kyle Jenkins found Greg Betzold below the goal line from the top of the right circle. Betzold dished the puck to Eric Cornel in the left circle who one-timed the puck into the net to tie the contest 1-1.
Dominic Masin took the lead, one-timing the puck into the net from the left circle on a pass from the right side of the ice sheet with 5:57 remaining in the first period.
In the second period, Peterborough’s Logan DeNoble slid the puck to Hunter Garlent in the slot who scored top-shelf over Moran’s left shoulder to increase Peterborough’s lead to two goals. Then, Hunter Garlent walked the puck out from the left corner and with patience, lit the lamp with 4:20 remaining in the middle frame.
After a turnover in the defensive zone, Steven Lorentz was denied by Moran with the right pad before Greg Betzold buried for his 27th of the season giving Peterborough the 5-1 lead heading into the second intermission.
Flint’s Matthew Menna relieved Moran in the third period. While on a breakaway, Peterborough’s Steven Lorentz deaked Menna and found the back of the net below the left pad for Peterborough’s last tally of the night.
