Flint, Mich. – The Knights scored two goals in the first and third periods to earn a 4-0 victory over the Firebirds in London’s first visit to the City of Flint.
The OHL’s best power play started the scoring Saturday night 5:54 into the opening frame. London’s Matthew Tkachuk earned his first of three assists from the goal line by dishing the puck to Mitchell Marner at the point. Marner, the fourth overall pick in the 2015 NHL Draft by the Toronto Maple Leafs, fired the puck on net and Brent Moran made the save before Aaron Berisha jammed home the rebound.
Then, Tkachuk ripped the puck off the crossbar on a breakaway prior to Marner backhanding the puck to a crashing Christian Dvorak who found twine for London’s second goal of the evening.
After a scoreless second period, Marner increased the Knights’ lead to three goals at 5:05. From the goal line on the left side of the cage, Tkachuk found Marner at the right circle prior to Marner scoring between the legs of Moran. Dvorak would earn the final tally of the night skating around a Firebirds defenseman and burying five-hole past Moran from the left circle.
London outshot Flint 37-24 and were 1-for-7 on the power play. Flint had the advantage in the face off circle earning 33 wins to London’s 32. London’s Tyler Parsons recorded his fourth shutout of the season and Marner had a four-point night.
The Firebirds are back in action Wednesday night on the road in Sault Ste. Marie. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. (EST) against the Greyhounds at the Essar Centre.
