Kingston, Ont. – Kingston scored two power play goals including a shorthanded tally in a 7-1 victory over Flint before more than 4,100 fans at the Rogers K-Rock Centre on Friday night.
Michael Dal Colle started the scoring off for the Frontenacs after receiving a pass at the left circle from the right circle by Spencer Watson before roofing the puck past a diving Brent Moran to give Kingston a 1-0 lead 2:28 into the game. In similiar fashion, Watson then found Jared Steege at the same location for his first of the evening.
With 4:08 remaining in the first period, Mathieu Henderson dished the puck to Vili Saarijarvi on the power play. Saarijarvi rifled the puck into the net from the point for Flint’s lone goal of the evening.
Then while shorthanded, Kingston’s Ryan Verbeek stripped a Firebirds player in the defensive zone and rushed up the far wall. Verbeek ripped a shot on net from the left circle. Moran made the initial save but Verbeek scored on his own rebound behind Moran to increase Kingston’s lead to two goals.
Then, while Flint had a delayed penalty and Kingston’s extra attacker on the ice, Dal Colle headmanned the puck to Watson who was streaking up the near wall. Watson fired the puck off the near post from the right circle, glove-side past Moran and into the net with 22 seconds remaining in the first period
After making eight saves on 12 shots, Moran was relieved by Matt Menna following 20 minutes of play
6:30 into the middle frame, Graeme Brown blasted a puck on net while on the power play from the point. Warren Foegele stopped the puck while Menna was in a save formation. Foegele pulled the puck to his forehand and slid it into the net to earn the Frontenacs a 5-1 lead.
With 23 seconds remaining in the second period, Lawson Crouse fired a puck on net. Juho Lammikko picked the puck up on the far side of the cage and opted to wrap the puck to the farside from behind the cage and into the net. Kingston’s Steege scored his second of the evening from the slot, glove-side past Menna with 8 seconds left in the game while on the power play for the final tally of the night.
