Barrie, Ont. – Flint’s Nicholas Caamano would score twice and Dane Johnstone would record his first Ontario Hockey League (OHL) goal in an 8-5 loss to the Barrie Colts on Thursday night. It was the first of a four-game road trip for the Firebirds.
Barrie’s Roy Radke would give the Colts a quick start 52 seconds into the game, scoring upstairs on Flint’s Alex Nedeljkovic from the right-wing circle.
With 11:06 remaining in the first period, the Colts would capitalize on a two-on-two rush as Radke scored his second of the game picking up his own rebound in front of the net.
Then, Zack Pittman’s stick would snap behind the net on a clearing attempt sending the puck right to the stick of Cordell James at the right circle, who roofed the puck far-side top-shelf, giving Barrie a three goal lead heading into the locker room after 20 minutes of play.
Barrie increased their lead to four goals 1:52 into the middle frame when Andrew Mangiapane found Julius Nattinen at the Flint blue line. Nattinen would convert on the breakaway opportunity.
Will Bitten increased his point-streak to four games at 3:55 of the second period after receiving a breakaway pass from Mathieu Henderson, scoring five-hole past Barrie’s Blackwood.
At 5:20 of the second period, Flint would come within two goals as Caamano buried from the left circle off the right post, scoring his first of the night.
A slap shot from Michael Webster around the top of the left circle at 9:43 of the middle frame would give Barrie a 5-2 lead. Flint’s Kyle Keyser would relieve Nedeljkovic after Barrie’s fifth tally of the game.
Then, Will Bitten would enter the Colts’ zone on the right-wing side, past a sliding Colts defender, eventually finding a streaking Caamano who converted top-shelf on Blackwood for the Firebirds with 7:10 to go in the middle period, bringing Flint within two goals.
Just past four minutes into the third period, Ryan Moore stepped out of the penalty box, found a loose puck in the Flint zone and transitioned toward the Colts area on a breakaway. Moore would score five-hole, shorthanded decreasing the gap to just one goal, 5-4.
The Colts would score three more goals in the next six minutes of play before Flint’s Dane Johnstone netted his first career OHL goal. Johnstone buried home a rebound from the bottom of the right circle to give Flint the final goal of the night with 7:01 remaining in the game.
