Brennan Othmann, Team Canada Capture Gold at World Juniors
Edmonton, Alta. – After becoming just the second Firebird to represent his country at the IIHF World Junior Championships, Firebirds’ captain Brennan Othmann and Team Canada capped off the tournament with a gold medal after defeating Finland 3-2 in overtime late last night.
Othmann played a key role for Team Canada, finishing with 2 G and 4 A in 6 GP and spent time on the first line throughout the tournament with MVP Mason McTavish (Anaheim Ducks) and 2023 NHL Draft top prospect Connor Bedard. His physical presence was noted throughout the tournament including by TSN’s Mark Masters.
After finishing a perfect 4-0 in the Group Stage, Canada took care of Switzerland 6-3 in the Quarterfinals before defeating Czechia 5-2 in the Semifinals. They took a 2-0 lead last night against Finland before seeing that lead slip away in the 3rd period. From there, after some intense back and forth play ensued to start overtime, Kent Johnson (Columbus Blue Jackets) put home the golden goal 3:20 into the frame.
Othmann now joins former captain Ty Dellandrea (Dallas Stars) as the only two Firebirds in franchise history to capture gold at the World Junior Championships. Team Canada won their 19th gold medal and fourth in the last seven seasons.
On the heels of a record-setting season in Flint for Othmann, the 2021 first-round pick of the New York Rangers now prepares for Rangers camp in September.
Flint Firebirds training camp is set to begin Monday, August 29th at Flint Iceland arena with the season opener now just 41 days away when they drop the puck at the Dort Financial Center Saturday, October 1st against the Niagara IceDogs at 7:00 p.m.
