Colts Weather the Storm, Shutout Guelph 3 – 0
The Barrie Colts returned to the ice as they took on the Guelph Storm at the Barrie Molson Centre. The Colts were looking to end a recent four game losing skid, the longest this season. Behind strong goaltending by Colts goaltender, Mathias Niederberger, the Barrie Colts came out victorious as they defeated the Guelph Storm 2-0.
The first period displayed plenty of offensive chances for both teams as the shots on goal favoured Guelph 17-10 but the game was scoreless after one period of play.
At the 15:24 mark of the second period, the Colts finally opened the scoring as Colts forward, Steven Beyers, scored to give them a 1-0 lead. A good cycle down low by Zach Hall and Anthony Camara led to the goal as Beyers finished the play with a hard wrist shot by Storm goaltender, Garret Sparks.
The game remained 1-0 for the Colts well into the third period until Colts forward Tyson Fawcett scored to increase their lead to 2-0. Fawcett’s goal came on the power play as he picked up a rebound off a shot by line mate Brendan Lemieux and slid the puck into the goal. Colts defenceman, Alex Yuill collected an assist on the goal.
The Barrie Colts would hang on to secure the 2-0 win over Guelph. Niederberger was terrific as he made 44 saves to record his third shutout of the season. The victory also gave Niederberger his 30th win of the season, good for second amongst all goaltenders in the OHL.
