Colts Send the Bears Flying on Saturday Night
A four goal first period by the Colts jolted them to a commanding 5-0 victory over the Oshawa Generals on Saturday afternoon.
Teddy’s were on the mind of all Colts fans as they welcomed the Oshawa Generals to town on a snowy Saturday afternoon. It was Monte Carlo Inns Teddy Bear Toss night.
The Teddy’s were tossed early in this one. After going last year’s game without a goal, Barrie didn’t want to waste anytime getting the scoring going this year. It was Alexey Lipanov who was set up by fellow Russia Andrei Svechnikov in the slot and he snapped home his 10th of the season. Tyler Tucker picked up the other assist on the historical Teddy goal.
Not long after, the Teddy’s weren’t flying but the puck was still going in the net. Jason Willms took an incredible feed from Zach Magwood and made no mistake beating Cole Ceci over the glove hand to extend the Barrie lead for his 16th of the seaosn. Lucas Chiodo also picked up an assist.
When you’re good, you get lucky and Jason Willms was on the back end of that. After former Colt Matt Brassard wrapped around the puck on the boards it took a Barrie bounce and right out to the Kitchener native who one handed it past Ceci to extend the Barrie lead to 3-0 and his second goal of the period.
Moments later, the crowd was back on their feet. A won faceoff in the Oshawa zone resulted in a point shot that bounced off a few defenders right to Lipanov who outwaited Oshawa’s new goaltender Kyle Keyser and slipped it in for his second of the game to make it 4-0. Svechnikov also picked up an assist on the goal.
In the second period, things were quieter. Barrie did get rewarded a penalty shot though. After receiving a streaking pass, Ryan Suzuki was sent in all alone before being hooked up. On the penalty shot he was unable to beat Keyser to extend the Colts lead to five.
In the third, it seemed inevitable that Barrie was going to hang on to this one, but Oshawa wasn’t going to make it easy on them. Forcing Colts netminder Leo Lazarev to make some big stops to keep the momentum in Barrie’s favour. After only facing 8 shots through the first two periods he remained sharp throughout the third.
It sparked the Colts, as Kyle Heitzner pulled out the slump buster as he buried his third goal of the season to extend Barrie’s lead to 5-0. Curtis Douglas and Aidan Brown tallied the assists.
The Colts will gallop into the end of the weekend with a date in North Bay against the Battalion Sunday afternoon. The boys will look to wrap up a perfect weekend against their Central Division rivals.
