COLTS SELECT MARKKULA IN THE IMPORT DRAFT
The Barrie Colts are proud to announce today that they have selected left-winger Samu Markkula with the 45th overall selection in the 2012 Canadian Hockey League Import Draft.
The 18-year old from Jyvaskyla, Finland played last season with the JYP Juniors and posted 12 goals and 26 assists for 38 points in 39 games played.
“Markkula is a tenacious kid who plays the game hard and has a very good skill set. He is a character kid who brought up the notion himself about coming to play Major Junior hockey”, said Colts GM Jason Ford.
The 5’9”, 172-pound forward is expected to join the Colts for the 2012-13 season.
“He plays with passion, skates well and will help the hockey club in the immediate future. He played an important role for Team Finland at the World U-18 Championships this past spring”, added Ford.
Last season the Colts picked goalie Mathias Niederberger 25th overall and he went on to become Barrie’s starter and racked up 29 wins in 49 games played.
Niederberger adds to the recent success the Colts have had in the Import Draft, joining the likes of Alexander Burmistrov, Petr Beranek and Tomas Marcinko. Recent Picks.
