Colts Silenced by the Wolves
It would be a night to forget for the Barrie Colts as the Sudbury Wolves lead by a 4 point effort from Dmitry Sokolov would down the Colts 8-2 at the Molson Centre Thursday night.
The Barrie Colts were back in action with another central division battle against the Wolves for the 3rd meeting of the season, Barrie holding the first two contests.
Earlier this week Barrie was recently announced 7th overall in the CHL Top 10 rankings for week 9.
With the Colts looking to start the weekend off right the boys would hit the ground running with a strong first period keeping much of the action in the visitor end
Just 3 minutes into this one, while playing shorthanded, Barrie would break the ice.
Jaden Peca would fire the initial shot off the right pad of Jake McGrath kicking out a perfect rebound for Alexey Lipanov to bury his 7th of the season. Also assisting on the play was Colts captain Justin Murray.
The Colts would take the 1-0 lead after the initial 20 minutes of play and outshoot the Wolves 11-4.
You knew the Wolves players would be looking to respond with a better effort heading into the second period and they made the Colts pay quickly answering with four goals of their own.
It wouldn’t take them long, just minutes into the middle frame the Wolves would jump on the powerplay.
After a number of saves by Colts starter Leo Lazarev, Sokolov would grab the rebound and blast it home to tie it 1-1.
Just moments later with the Colts down a man once again, Luke Bignell would get sprung free on a breakaway. Bignell would be hauled down resulting in a penalty shot but McGrath would stand tall keeping the game tied.
But just seconds later with the Wolves still on the powerplay they would take their first lead of the game. Lazarev would make the initial save but Blake Murray would pounce on the rebound to make it 2-1.
Sudbury would keep the momentum going. With the Colts on their own powerplay Dawson Baker would pick off a pass at their own blue line heading down ice on a 2 on 0. He’d slide the cross-ice pass to Drake Pilon making no mistake to put the Wolves ahead by two.
Sokolov would add his second marker for the Wolves at 7:59, snapping one over the shoulder of Lazarev to make it 4-1.
Heading into the final 20 minutes the Colts would need a huge response to get back in this one but the pressure would continue from Sudbury.
The Wolves would add goals from Murray, Anthony Tabek, Troy Lajeunesse, and Macauley Carson to finish with eight goals on the night.
The Colts would only get one in the third, as Jason Willms would setup Zach Magwood in front of the Wolves net to one time his 11th goal of the season.
The Colts will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon as they host the Kitchener Rangers for a Saturday afternoon matchup televised nationally on Rogers Sportsnet at 3:30pm before heading to Oshawa Sunday to wrap up the weekend.
