Wildcats hire new assistant coach

MONCTON, Tuesday, August 8, 2006 (QMJHL) – The Moncton Wildcats announced the hiring of Montreal native Tony Martino as the team’s new assistant coach. Last year, he was the bench boss of the Aisago Hockey AS in Italy.

Tony is a fierce competitor, and someone who was on the top of my list when I became head coach for this franchise,” said John Torchetti, Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations for the Wildcats. Mr. Irving is looking for people who know what it takes to win to be part of this team and Tony has won wherever he has gone. His record speaks for itself and he is respected throughout hockey.”

Martino began his coaching career with the New Mexico Scorpions in 1999 in what was then the WPHL. He led the franchise for three seasons, during which time the WPHL and CHL merged, and compiled a 126-66-13 (.620) record. He brought the Scorpions to the WPHL finals during his first season behind the bench. He then moved on to Knoxville (Atlantic Coast Hockey League) in 2003-04 and coached the Ice Bears into the finals before heading overseas.

As for his role in Moncton, I will do everything in my power to make this team successful. The goal is always to win a championship. That is Mr. Irving’s way, that is John’s way and certainly that is my way. I can’t wait to get started with training camp next week and build on the unbelievable season the Wildcats enjoyed last year.”
