Our 20’s – Cape Breton Eagles
Throughout the summer, we’ll be looking back at the QMJHL careers of our 20-year-old players, who will be moving on to new opportunities next season. Today, we feature the graduating players of the Cape Breton Eagles.
Lewis Gendron
A seventh-round pick of the Sherbrooke Phoenix in 2021, Gendron returned to Magog in the U18 AAA ranks as a 16-year-old before playing collegiate hockey and earning a seven-game audition with the Phoenix at age 17. The following season, he established himself as a full-time QMJHL player, recording 23 goals and 44 points before being traded to Cape Breton midway through the 2024–25 season. Gendron saved his best for his 20-year-old season, posting a career-high 56 points, the highest total among the Eagles. The Sherbrooke native concludes his Q career with 145 points in 193 games, and should play for Concordia University next year.
Félix Hamel
Also a seventh-round pick in 2021, selected by the Drakkar, Hamel suited up for Baie-Comeau, Shawinigan, Blainville-Boisbriand and Cape Breton during his 116-game QMJHL career. The 6’3″ goaltender enjoyed his best season in 2024–25 with the Cataractes and Armada, posting 30 wins in 44 games along with four shutouts, a 2.63 goals-against average and a .914 save percentage. This season, he served as the Eagles’ number-one goaltender, appearing in 38 games while recording a 2.93 goals-against average and a .899 save percentage. His academic and athletic journey will continue at the University of Ottawa in 2026–27.
Lucas Romeo
Invited to the Charlottetown Islanders’ training camp in 2022, Romeo spent a year and a half in Charlottetown before being traded to Cape Breton. The big Ontario native, standing 6’3″ and weighing 206 pounds, quickly became a fan favourite with the Eagles thanks to his physical and hard-nosed style of play. Over his career, he recorded at least 15 goals and 30 points in three different seasons, finishing with 119 points in 238 junior games—exactly 0.50 points per game. He also accumulated 317 penalty minutes. Romeo will play for the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) next season.
