Inside the Numbers for Week #12

This week, we’re going to explain just how important the Rimouski Océanic’s next 19 matches are for Head Coach Serge Beausoleil (PHOTO), who could beat a record belonging to Patrick Roy. Elsewhere, November could be a synonym for success for the Val-d’Or Foreurs; their goaltender, Etienne Montpetit is putting up a superb goals against average of 1.15.

Goal – 200 wins in 314 matches

• Patrick Roy’s RECORD – in 2009-10, in his 5^th season in the league, Patrick Roy became the QMJHL coach who took the fewest games to get to his 200^th victory. In his 315^th game, the then Remparts coach was able to beat by 7 the then record of Orval Tessier from the winter of 1977.
• Serge Beausoleil (Rimouski) – his lifetime QMJHL win percentage of .631 speaks for itself. 186 victories in 295 games. Mathematically speaking, the above Roy record is still within his reach. In order for him to get to 200 wins in 314 outings, his Océanic will have to take 14 of their next 19 games.
• Dominique Ducharme (Halifax) – at the start of this season, he was pretty much in the same situation as Serge Beausoleil. But things have gone so that the Moosheads will have to win 10 out 10 of their next games for him to reach Roy’s record. To date, Ducharme has won 190 out of 305 games.

PERFORMANCES

• Val-d’Or – everything is still going their way, and they are only 7 points behind the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies, the Western Division leaders. Mario Durocher’s boys have won their last 7 games, 5 of them by a margin of 4 goals or more!
• At home this weekend – The Foreurs welcome Drummondville tonight upon whom they inflicted an 8-1 loss last Saturday.
• Etienne Montpetit – The 18-year-old goalie is just off his 6^th consecutive win, a sequence in which he maintained a goals against of 1.15 and a spectacular save percentage of .955. Among other things, he shutout the Armada on November 14^th, making 26 stops. He is currently among the league elite with 14 wins (1^st – tied with L-P Guindon), 1335 minutes played (2^nd) a GA of 2.65 (3^rd) and SV of .902 (6^th)
• The captain – Defenceman and captain of the club, Olivier Galipeau has collected 7 points in as many games since the 1^st of November (3 goals, 4 assists, +5) In his last 2 games he has stood in the way of the opposition with 8 hits!
• 4 on 5 – The Foreurs dominate the league with their 12 goals scored with a man disatvantage; the record is 33, a record shared by the 2000-01 Foreurs and the Sorel Eperviers of 1973-74. A very revealing comparison; last year’s Océanic scored 25 times on the PK, 10 ahead of the Foreurs who came in second in that regard.

ON THE ATTACK

• The line of the hour – What can you say about the stunning performance of the Cape-Breton Screaming Eagles’ first line? Evgeny Svechnikov (19 points), Pierre-Luc Dubois (18) and Maxim Lazarev (16) have produced 53 points in their last 9 games played in November. They have scored 22 of their team’s 40 goals during this period – 55% of the team’s offense.
• Alex Dostie (Gatineau) – back from an ‘Upper Body Injury’ on October 31^st after a whole month off, he has since collected 13 points in 11 matches. His average of 1.53 goals per game this season is the best on his team, ahead of Vitalii Abramov (1.30). Dostie now has 26 points and 17 assists in 17 games.
• Mitchell Balmas (Charlottetown) – with 11 goals in 27 outings, he is the 3^rd best league goal scorer in the 17-year age group. He come in just after Pierre-Luc Dubois (CAP | 17) and Vitalii Abramov (GAT | 14).

DEFENCEMEN

• Adam Holwell (Moncton) – The Wildcats’ #2 just might be the most underrated defenceman in the QMJHL: He may not be spectacular but he’s worth his weight in gold to his team, even earning the assistant captain’ ‘A’ during a recent three-game road trip. The 18-year-old Nova Scotian is among QMJHL leaders in several categories: 21 points (7^th), 17 assists (6^th), a plus-minus of +15 (6^th), 4 power play goals (3^rd). He has racked-up 9 points in 8 games in November. In 19 of his 26 matches this year he has maintained a plus/minus of above or better then even. Methodical and disciplined, he has shown real leadership for the Wildcats and sets an example with his intelligent play. It’s not rare to see him block a lot of shots, not only with his pads but also pucks in flight with his hand; an unorthodox method he displayed last Wednesday on the penalty kill against Blainville-Boisbriand.
• Thomas Chabot (Saint John) – Since the first of November he has collected 10 points, 8 of them on enemy ice. His plus/minus for November is +6.
• Matt Murphy (Québec) – The veteran’s steady play certainly has something to so with the Remparts’ success this season. His was credited with 9 assists in his last 9 games, with a +/- or +2. Murphy took part in the NHL’s Pittsburgh Penguins’ training camp, and is still a free agent who can eventually enter the professional leagues.
• Guillaume Brisebois (Acadie-Bathurst) – The 18-year-old defenceman who was drafted by Vancouver last June, just amassed 3 goals and 4 assists in his last 9 games with the Titan. Moreover, he has maintained a +/- of +4. He was able to get on the scoresheet in 4 of his last 5 games.

CURRENT LEADERS

• Conor Garland (Moncton) – He needs only one more point to reach the summit of 250 since the beginning of his QMJHL career. Last Wednesday in overtime, he achieved a new team record by scoring at least one point is 22 consecutive games. Sébastien Roger’s record of 21 from the 1997-98 season is now relegated to second place. Garland is attempting to win the league scoring championship for the second year in a row. He is currently in 1^st place with 49 points, 4 more than the Drummondville Voltigeurs’ Michael Carcone. Garland, who collected 129 points last year, if he maintains his current pace (2.23 points per game) can look forward to a 140-point season this year.
• Michael Joly (Rimouski) – with 96 lifetime goals, would seem to be in a three-way race to 100 regular season, QMJHL goals. Anthony Richard (VDO | 93) as well as Guillaume Gauthier (SHE | 92) are the other two players chasing this ‘goal’.
• Anthony Richard – a few interesting milestones concerning his lifetime, regular season stats are coming up for him; in terms of games played (199), points (191), goals (93), and assists (98).

• Francis Perron (Rouyn-Noranda) – With 2 more goals last night last night against Drummondville, he has stretched his productive streak to 23 games – but is still chasing the team record (Mike Ribeiro | ROU | 35). Note that no team in the league has been able to shut him out of the scoring this year. Perron collects on average, 2 points per game, an exceptional pace maintained elsewhere this season only by Conor Garland (MON | 2.23) and Anthony Beauvillier (SHA | 2.00).
