Videotron Player of the Week | Mathys Fernandez (November 6, 2023)
The latest Videotron Player of the Week in the QMJHL is Chicoutimi Saguenéens goaltender Mathys Fernandez. The 18-year-old from Blainville, Quebec went 3-0-0-0 on the week with a 1.00 GAA, .963% save percentage and one shutout as the Sags made a charge up the Eastern Conference standings.
On Wednesday night at home, Fernandez was almost unbeatable, kicking aside 23 shots in a 5-1 Chicoutimi triumph over the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada. For his efforts, the second-year netminder was named the game’s second star.
Back at home on Saturday afternoon, Fernandez and the Saguenéens continued to roll along. Facing Victoriaville’s formidable offense, he once again came up with several clutch saves in a game that remained close throughout. When the final buzzer sounded, Fernandez had made 32 saves, was once again named second star for the contest and the Sags had earned a 4-2 decision over the Tigres.
Fernandez would save his best for last on Sunday afternoon in Quebec. In a classic goaltender’s duel, he would stop all 24 shots directed his way in a 1-0 victory over the Remparts. For Fernandez, named the game’s first star this time around, it was his second career QMJHL shutout while the win propelled the Saguenéens into fifth place in the hotly contested Eastern Conference.
Acquired from the Val-d’Or Foreurs this past June, Fernandez has produced a solid start in his time with the Saguenéens, sporting a 5-2-1-2 record to go with a 3.00 GAA.
