Titan fall to Sea Dogs in shootout
BATHURST – The Acadie-Bathurst Titan fell to the Saint John Sea Dogs 4-3 in a shootout Sunday afternoon at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
A power play goal 2:52 into the first period from Sea Dogs left-winger Evgeny Sapelnikov gave Saint John the lead, but it was a lead that Titan forward Dylan Andrews was quick to stop. Minutes later, thanks to assists from Riley Kidney and Cole Huckins, Andrews snapped the puck past Jonathan Lemieux to tie the game at 8:26.
Saint John’s Peter Reynolds scored their second goal of the period shortly after at 15:20 to close the period with a 2-1 lead. The visitors continued to pull away with a powerplay goal again, this time from Josh Lawrence at 1:39 in the second frame to make it 3-1.
Riley Kidney started to close the gap for the home team at 16:33 in the second – with assists from Marc-Andre Gaudet and Jaxon Bellamy – to bring the Titan within one, and Jacob Melanson tied the game at 16:36 in the third period. Logan Chisholm and David Doucet assisted on the goal.
After a scoreless overtime, Reynolds and William Dufour each scored in the shootout for Saint John to take the game 4-3. Riley Kidney earned the first of the game with two points and goaltender Jan Bednar, who stopped 33 of the Sea Dogs 37 shots on goal, earned third star honors. The Titan were without defenceman Zach Biggar this afternoon as he was serving a one-game suspension for boarding. Forward Bennett MacArthur is still out of the lineup with an upper-body injury.
Acadie-Bathurst will be on the road this week for a three-game road swing to Quebec. The trip begins Wednesday night when they visit the Quebec Remparts at the Videotron Centre.
