The Acadie-Bathurst Titan downed the Halifax Mooseheads Friday night in Nova Scotia. Bathurst pulled away with a 3-2 victory in overtime at Scotiabank Centre.
It was a memorable night for Titan rookie and Nova Scotian, Maddex Marmulak. In his first Quebec Maritimes Junior Hockey League game in his home province, the 17-year-old forward banked his first QMJHL goal off Halifax’s Mathis Rousseau to give the Titan a one goal lead early in the first period. About four minutes later, Dawson Sharkey took a tripping penalty which put the Mooseheads on the powerplay. Antoine Fontaine shot a rebound past Josh Fleming to give the home side its first point of the game. The game was tied 1-1 by the end of the first.
The Mooseheads, who the Titan beat 5-1 at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre on Wednesday, took an early lead in the second frame as Liam Killfoil slipped the rebound past Fleming to bring the game 2-1 at the 5:49 minute mark. Bathurst threw everything they could at Rousseau in the second period but couldn’t beat the 20-year-old netminder. Halifax would take a 2-1 lead into the second intermission.
Action in the third period started off slow for both sides. Bathurst successfully killed off two penalties early to keep the deficit to one goal. Titan forward Blake Pilgrim-Edwards, who is also from Nova Scotia, ripped a short side shot past Rousseau to tie the game at two. The Titan had a late powerplay but were unable to convert with the man advantage.
The third period ended 2-2 to force overtime.
In OT, after exciting back and forth action, great goaltending, and solid defense, the Titan added pressure. Mathieu St-Onge showed off his blistering speed before feeding Tyson Goguen. Goguen, who was acquired from the Rimouski Oceanic in June, buried the shot under Rousseau to win the game for the Titan. The OT winner marked Goguen’s first goal with the Titan.
Goguen was named third star of the game. Fleming made 31 saves to secure the first star.
The next home game is Sunday, Oct. 13 when the Titan host the Victoriaville Tigres for the first time this season.
Puck drop is 3 p.m. at the K.C. Irving Regional Centre.
