RECAP: Reynolds nets hat trick in win over Rimouski
RIMOUSKI, QC – The Saint John Sea Dogs finished their three-game Quebec road trip with a second straight win, 6-3 over the Rimouski Océanic, to bring home four of a possible six points.
Jacob Mathieu of the Océanic tallied the first goal of the game at 18:15, but Sea Dogs captain Peter Reynolds wasted no time with a response goal at 19:10, assisted by Eriks Mateiko and Joseph Ianniello, tying the game at one. The first period ended in a 1-1 tie, with the Sea Dogs slightly behind in shots, 8-6.
The Océanic opened the second period with a goal from Maël St-Denis 48 seconds in to recapture the lead, 2-1. However, the Sea Dogs kept pace, with Mateiko scoring at 5:58, assisted by Reynolds, evening the score at two. Rimouski forward Alexandre Blais then put his team ahead again at 7:36, but Vince Élie, with his third goal of the road trip and 11th of the season, scored a short-handed goal at 12:54 to bring the game back to even, 3-3 after 40 minutes of play.
Reynolds scored the eventual game-winning goal on the powerplay just 27 seconds into the third period, assisted by Élie and Ianniello, giving the Sea Dogs a 4-3 lead. He didn’t stop there, finalizing his hat-trick at 5:28 with help from Ianniello and Nate Tivey. Pavel Simek added an empty net goal at 17:59, assisted by Reynolds, to put a stamp on a 6-3 victory for the Sea Dogs.
A five-point effort earned Reynolds the first star of the game while Ianniello picked up third star honours with three assists.
The Sea Dogs now return home with some pep in their step and a few days to rest before for their next challenge against the Western Conference leading Rouyn-Noranda Huskies on Saturday at 7pm.
