RECAP: Sea Dogs shut out by Huskies
SAINT JOHN – The Saint John Sea Dogs two-game winning streak came to an abrupt stop as they were shut out 4-0 by the Western Conference-leading Rouyn-Noranda Huskies in their final matchup of the season at TD Station on Saturday night. This brings the Sea Dogs record to 8-13-1-2.
The Huskies got the on the board first with Antonin Verreault opening the scoring at 4:38. Momentum continued to build for the Huskies in the first period with Benjamin Brunelle scoring at 16:47 after a Sea Dogs turnover. Tensions intensified on the ice following a hit by Sea Dogs forward Luka Benoit, resulting in three penalties. Alex Carr expanded the Huskies lead to 3-0 with a goal at 19:48. The period concluded with the Huskies ahead 3-0, leading in shots 16-8.
Rouyn-Noranda maintained their force with Bill Zonnon scoring at 1:22. Shortly after, at 1:40, a high sticking penalty was called on Anthony Turcotte but Saint John was unable to capitalize on the man advantage. The Sea Dogs faced their own setback with Eriks Mateiko penalized for checking from behind at 11:45, however they were able to kill it off. The second period ended 4-0 in favour of the Huskies, with shots 26-10.
The Huskies racked up penalties in the third, including an interference call on Leighton Carruthers and a charging penalty against Samuel Rousseau for a hit on Joseph Ianniello that forced him to leave the game early. Regardless of their efforts, including a big pad save by Leaver at 17:50, the Sea Dogs were unable to break through. The game concluded with a 4-0 victory for the Huskies and a 34-13 shot advantage.
The Sea Dogs have a quick turnaround, facing the Val-d’Or Foreurs tomorrow afternoon at 3 pm at TD Station. Saint John previously defeated the Foreurs 5-1 earlier this year on the road, setting the stage for a great game at home.
