RECAP: Sea Dogs fall short against Voltigeurs
DRUMMONDVILLE, QC – The Saint John Sea Dogs kept it close but couldn’t secure a lead against the Drummondville Voltigeurs on Saturday evening, falling 4-2 after a late empty-net goal. The Sea Dogs record now sits at 7-7-0-0.
Eriks Mateiko and Darien Reynolds were the two goal scorers for Saint John.
Sam Oliver led the Voltigeurs with two goals. The other Drummondville scorers were Luke Woodworth and Ethan Gauthier.
GAME SUMMARY
The Voltigeurs opened the scoring at 14:58 when Sam Oliver fired a wrist shot from the point, beating Justin Robinson blocker side. Just 20 seconds later, Saint John responded. Tyler Peddle slid a backhand pass to Darien Reynolds who put a quick shot past the outstretched Louis-Félix Charrois, tying the game at one.
Seven minutes into the second period, Drummondville regained the lead. Luke Woodworth saucer-passed the puck to Ethan Gauthier, who slipped it under Robinson’s pad. Four minutes later, Gauthier drop-passed the puck to Woodworth, who sniped the top left corner to go up 3-1.
The Sea Dogs tightened the gap with 3:12 left in the second, as captain Eriks Mateiko, set up by Olivier Groulx, outmaneuvered around a Voltigeurs defender and went five-hole on Charrois.
With 40 seconds remaining in the third period and the Sea Dogs goaltender pulled, Oliver scored his second of the night on the empty net to seal the game 4-2.
