The Baby Leafs Are Back: Regiment and Mary Brown’s Centre Celebrate 25th Anniversary with Throwback Nights
ST. JOHN’S, NL — The St. John’s Maple Leafs are returning to the ice where they made their final stand.
The Newfoundland Regiment and Mary Brown’s Centre are partnering on two Throwback Nights this November to celebrate the arena’s 25th anniversary. The first takes place Thursday, November 5, when the Regiment hosts the Moncton Wildcats at 7:00 p.m. wearing St. John’s Maple Leafs jerseys from the 2001 to 2005 era.
The AHL Maple Leafs called St. John’s home from 1991 to 2005, moving from Memorial Stadium into the brand-new Mile One Centre in 2001.
“When this building opened, the Baby Leafs were the team that filled it,” said Regiment President Glenn Stanford, former Vice-President of the St. John’s Maple Leafs. “Twenty-five years later, seeing a new generation wear that jersey on the same ice is something special. We want to bring back the fans who were there from the start and share that history with the families just getting to know it.”
“For 25 years, this building has been where Newfoundland and Labrador comes together, and hockey has been part of its story from day one,” said Brent Meade, CEO of St. John’s Sports and Entertainment. “Bringing the Maple Leafs jersey back to this ice is a fitting way to celebrate that history.”
Fans are encouraged to wear their Baby Leafs gear. The second Throwback Night, on Thursday, November 26 against the Chicoutimi Saguenéens at 7:00 p.m., will have its theme announced soon, with more exciting announcements to come in the weeks ahead as the Regiment and Mary Brown’s Centre celebrate the building’s 25th anniversary.
