An important point
The seventh consecutive defeat of the Gatineau Olympiques occurred in a shootout after they were leading 2-1 with less than five minutes left in the third period. A disappointing outcome, when Benoit Groulx’s men provided a good performance against a solid team, the Blainville-Boisbriand Armada.
However the 1 point they got by going in overtime allows them to get closer to the Saguenéens and 12th rank overall.
The 3189 spectators at the Robert-Guertin Centre had to wait till the second period to see a goal. Danick Martel of the Armada broke the ice with the help of David Bédard and Xavier Ouellet. Martin Reway took only 16 seconds to respond for the locals. At the same time, he ended a drought of eight games without scoring.
The Olympiques regained the lead late in the third period with the 26th goal of Emile Poirier. The euphoria of the Olympiques supporters was quickly tempered by the tying goal from Philippe Sanche.
In overtime, each team got 2 shots on the opposing net. However in regulation time, Robert Steeves had to stand in front of 27 shots, while his opponent, Étienne Marcoux, he faced only 15 shots.
Despite the exemplary performance of Steeves for 65 minutes, he was the only one to give in in the shootout. Tommy Giroux beat him as the last shooter. Olivier Knight-Rouleau got the chance to continue the game, but Marcoux closed the door.
The Gatineau Olympiques are now 13th in the league. The last stage of the season draws to an end. There are only 6 games left to play for the Olympiques to improve their position in the standings.
