Islanders select two forwards in the 2020 QMJHL American Draft
The 2020 QMJHL American Entry Draft was held Monday, June 8th. The two-round draft gives teams the opportunity to select two players from the New England states in a format that was introduced to the league in 2018.
With the 12th overall selection in the draft, the Charlottetown Islanders selected left winger Jakub Teply from the Brunswick School Bruins. Teply turns 18 on June 19th and stands 6 feet tall. Last season, the big winger from Stamford, Connecticut led the Bruins with 22 goals and finished the season with 32 points in 31 games. Teply has committed to playing with the Powell River Kings of the British Columbia Hockey League (BCHL) next season.
Next, the Islanders selected centreman Brendan Gorman from St. Sebastian’s School. Gorman is a 17-year-old centreman from Arlington, Massachusetts. While QMJHL has him listed at 5’9, other sources have Gorman listed as standing 5’11. Last season, he recorded 10 goals and 26 points, good for fifth on his team.
Gorman is the younger brother of former Islanders draft pick and Pittsburgh Penguins prospect Liam Gorman. Liam was selected in the 8th round, 135th overall by the Islanders in the 2016 QMJHL Draft and was a 6th round selection by the Penguins in the 2018 NHL Draft.
“Our philosophy in today’s American draft, as it has been in year’s past, was to acquire the most talented players on our list at our selection,” said Islanders head coach and general manager Jim Hulton regarding the American Draft. “Both Jakub and Brendan are highly-skilled players with bright futures.”
