Inside the Isles: March 4th – Moncton Wildcats
After a much needed day off on Saturday the Isles are back in action on Sunday against the Wildcats.
Moncton currently ranks 14th in the league, owning a record of 25-29-5-3. The Wildcats are also the most recent team to clinch a berth in the QMJHL playoffs.
After starting the season red-hot the offence of the Wildcats has slowed down as of late, ranking 9th overall, netting 207 goals through 62 games this season.
When the Wildcat’s offence is at it’s best, P.E.I. native Jeremy McKenna can often be found in the centre of the action. McKenna leads the Wildcats in goals with 33 and points with 70, nearly tripling his offensive output from last season in fewer games played.
The Moncton 5-on-5 offence has shown flashes of brilliance this season, but the power play has not. The Wildcats success on the man-advantage has plummeted, now ranking 12th in the league, capitalizing on only 18.1 per cent of their chances.
Though their offence is good enough to keep them in close games, it’s the defence of the Wildcats that has hurt them most this season. Moncton has allowed the 4th most goals-against in the league with 253 getting past goaltenders Matthew Waite and former Islander Mark Gramerbauer.
A sub-par penalty kill has not helped their netminders, as the Wildcats sit 10th in penalty killing, stopping their opponents just 79.7 per cent of the time.
