Islanders & PEI MFRC partner to launch Hometown Heroes program
In his first season with the Islanders, forward Cole Huckins was quick to take the initiative to launch a new program called Hometown Heroes, partnering with the P.E.I. Military Family Resource Centre (PEI MFRC).
Each game, a military family will be invited to the game as Cole’s guests. They will get a tour of the locker room and a meet-and-greet with Cole.
“It’s really special to be involved in the community,” he said. “I’m very grateful for what those families do for our country so to give back is pretty special. I look forward to meeting the families and hope they enjoy the game.”
The program wouldn’t be possible without the PEI MFRC. They are a not-for-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors, which believes that military families play a vital role in the success of CAF Members and Veterans.
The PEI MFRC’s core values come down to teamwork, respect, integrity, commitment, and inclusion. This helps them with their commitment to enriching the lives of individuals and families in Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) communities through positive action, education, and support.
“The PEI MFRC is thrilled to have Cole and the rest of the Charlottetown Islanders team recognize, support, and help raise awareness by celebrating our Military members and their families at each home game. We applaud the “ Hometown Heroes” program and welcome the partnership that brings Canada’s favourite pastime and our dedicated Military members and their families together!” said PEI MFRC representative, Tammy Rayner.
The program officially launched Friday, October 13, 2023 in the 5-4 win over Drummondville. Petty Officer Troy Arsenault and his family were invited to the game as the first family as part of this program.
“It was great! My family really enjoyed tonight and it was great for the kids to get out,” Arsenault said. “I’m grateful for everything the Huckins and the Islanders have done for us.”
Head Coach and General Manager Jim Hulton is very supportive of Cole and the program.
“We’re very excited to support Cole in this fantastic project,” he said. “We have the utmost respect for our military members and their families,” he said. “This program offers us an opportunity to recognize the many sacrifices they make to ensure our safety and quality of life.”
