Charlottetown stays winless in Québec as they lose 6-3 to the Chicoutimi Saguenéens
The Chicoutimi Saguenéens defeated the Charlottetown Islanders by a score of 6 to 3 in the midst of Charlottetown’s first road trip through Québec of the season Saturday evening.
Chicoutimi came out of the gates flying. They had all the momentum in the first half of the first period, also setting the tone for another physical affair.
Defenseman Isaac Vos took a penalty early, but Aksels Ozols was able to stop some high-quality chances to help kill the penalty.
Saguenéens forward Alexis Morin took a cross-checking penalty, which led to the opening goal of the game. Isles captain, Michael Horth, increased his league-leading goal count to seven. Alexis Michaud and Giovanni Morneau each had an assist.
Chicoutimi outshot the Isles 12-4 heading into the first intermission.
The physicality really picked up in the second period as eight total players were sent to the penalty box for roughing.
Émile Duquet scored his first of two in the game, tipping in a shot from the point to tie the game at one.
Ozols continued to look sharp, stopping everything else Chicoutimi’s offence sent his way in the period.
A four-on-three powerplay led to Michaud scoring his third of the season as he slap shot a feed from Marcus Kearsey, restoring the Islanders lead.
Despite having 12 shots in the frame, Chicoutimi was outshooting Charlottetown 24-15 going into the intermission.
The Saguenéens were quick to the scoreboard to open the third as just under three minutes in, Thomas Desriosseaux tied the game up at two goals apiece.
Chicoutimi kept the pressure up as the period went on. Émile Duquet tipped in his second goal of the game giving the Saguenéens a 3-2 lead. The play was reviewed to see if Duquet hit the puck with his stick above the crossbar, but the call on the ice stood.
Horth responded with his second goal of the game on the power play. That goal increases his total to eight in seven games.
It wasn’t enough to swing momentum though as Morin buried a back-door pass from the speedy Maxim Massé to restore the two-goal-lead for the Saguenéens.
Morin added an empty netter to push the final score to 6-3 in favour of Chicoutimi.
Charlottetown went 2 for 3 on the powerplay while the Saguenéens went 1 for 4 on the man-advantage.
Ozols finished the game stopping 29 of 34 shots faced, and Chicoutimi goaltender Raphaël Précourt stopped 17 of 20 shots.
The road trip wraps up on October 9th, Thanksgiving Monday, as the Isles roll into Rimouski to take on the Oceanic. Puck drop at the Colisée Financière Sun Life is at 3:00 p.m.
