#CHLStats: Gavin McKenna extends point streak to 38 games, passing Crosby for the CHL’s second-longest streak since 2000
Having picked up a point on all seven of his team’s goals on Saturday night, Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) forward and top 2026 NHL Draft prospect Gavin McKenna (37G-84A in 54 GP) extended his point streak to 38 games – passing Rimouski Océanic (QMJHL) alumnus Sidney Crosby (37 games) for the second-longest point streak in the CHL over the last 25 years (see complete list below).
The only skater in the CHL to have registered a longer point streak in a single season since 2000 than McKenna is Québec Remparts (QMJHL) graduate Alexander Radulov, who went 50 straight games with a point from October 26 to March 15 during the 2005-06 season.
Specifically, during the Medicine Hat Tigers’ 7-3 win over the Red Deer Rebels on Saturday, McKenna established a new single-game career-high by tallying seven points (3G-4A), which included scoring his third hat-trick of the 2024-25 campaign. The Tigers’ left winger registered four points (2G-2A) in the first period alone. Saturday also marked the seventh straight game that McKenna has recorded two points or more.
With two games remaining for McKenna and the Medicine Hat Tigers, the 17-year-old from Whitehorse, Yukon, could extend his point streak to 40 games before the 2024-25 regular season comes to a close a week from today.
With a point in 38 straight contests dating back to November 6, McKenna also extended what stands as the longest point streak in the Western Hockey League (WHL) since 1996, having bested the previous mark of 35 set by Chicago Blackhawks forward Connor Bedard (Regina Pats) and Carolina Hurricanes forward Logan Stankoven (Kamloops Blazers) during the 2022-23 season. Additionally, McKenna’s 38-game point streak is the longest of any skater in the CHL this season (see complete list below).
Since November 6, McKenna has totaled 28 goals and 64 assists for 92 points in 38 contests – meaning he is averaging a CHL-best 2.42 points per game over that stretch. The 17-year-old forward has also amassed 30 multi-point outings over his 38-game point streak and he’s played a big part in the Tigers’ strong second half in 2024-25. With 24 victories in 28 contests (24-2-1-1) since the beginning of January, including eight wins in a row, Medicine Hat has moved into first place in the WHL’s Eastern Conference and reached fifth in the CHL Top-10 Rankings.
In addition to his current point streak and the success of his club, the 2024-25 campaign has been a memorable one for McKenna. The reigning WHL and CHL Rookie of the Year sits third in the CHL in scoring with 121 points (37G-84A), trailing only Saginaw Spirit forward Michael Misa (126 points) and Spokane Chiefs forward Andrew Cristall (125 points). Moreover, McKenna’s 84 assists are the most of any skater in both the WHL and CHL in 2024-25.
Earlier this season, at the end of January, McKenna reached a major milestone against the Portland Winterhawks by collecting his 200th career point in what was his 118th career regular season game. The latter made him the third-fastest skater in the WHL to hit the mark since 1996, trailing only reigning NHL Rookie of the Year and Regina Pats alumnus Connor Bedard (107 games) and Calgary Hitmen alum Pavel Brendl (96 games). Additionally, at the 2025 IIHF World Junior Championship, McKenna made history by becoming the eighth youngest player to ever suit up for Team Canada at a World Juniors.
Taken first overall in the 2022 WHL Prospects Draft, McKenna has previously captured gold for Team Canada at both the 2024 IIHF World U18 Championship and the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup. Following the 2023-24 season, McKenna was named a member of both the CHL’s Third All-Star and All-Rookie Teams after he registered 97 points in 61 games as a 16-year-old.
