2014 WU17 – Day 1 Results
The 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge includes 75 players from the CHL competing in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Here’s a recap of Sunday’s action:
Quebec 4 vs. Pacific 3
In the first all-Canadian contest of the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge it was Team Quebec who emerged victorious with a 4-3 win over Team Pacific.
Jeremy Roy (Sherbrooke Phoenix) led the way offensively for Quebec with a goal and two assists tying the game midway through the third period.
Nicolas Roy (Chicoutimi Sagueneens) chipped in three assists helping set-up Maxime Fortier’s game-winner at 15:07.
Jason Bell (Cape Breton Screaming Eagles) also helped set-up the winner and opened the scoring for Team Quebec at 3:53 of the first period.
Brad Morrison (Prince George Cougars) and Nick Merkley (Kelowna Rockets) each scored a goal and two assists for Team Pacific.
Quebec goes for a 2-0 start when it faces the Czech Republic on Monday afternoon (2 p.m. AT) in Sydney, N.S., while Pacific is back in action Monday night (7 p.m. AT) against West in North Sydney.
Team Ontario 8 vs. Germany 1
Team Ontario opened the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a huge 8-1 win over Germany.
Mitchell Marner (London Knights) scored a hat-trick and Dylan Strome (Erie Otters) also finished with three points scoring once with two assists.
Matthew Kreis (Barrie Colts) opened the scoring at 4:26 of the first period and also added an assist, while Blake Speers (Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds) netted the game-winner plus an assist for a two-point game as well.
Travis Konecny (Ottawa 67’s) and Sean Day (Mississauga Steelheads) each finished the game with two assists.
Ontario will look for a 2-0 start when it takes on Team Atlantic in an all-Canadian match-up Monday night in Sydney (7 p.m. AT).
In other Preliminary Round action on Sunday, the United States beat Russia by a score of 5-1, and Sweden defeated the Czech Republic 3-1.
