Team Russia Earns 4-3 Win and Sweep over QMJHL
DRUMMONDVILLE, Wednesday, November 10, 2010 – Team Russia went a perfect 2-0 by beating Team QMJHL 4-3 in front of 3,335 fans at the Marcel-Dionne Centre.
Crowd favourite Jonathan Brunelle gave Team QMJHL a 1-0 lead at 4:08 in the first period by letting a soft wrist-shot go from the top of the face-off circle which nevertheless caught Emil Garipov completely off guard. The Russians countered only a few minutes later with Vladimir Malinovskiy pushing his own rebound past a sprawling Maxime Clermont.
Ryan Kavanagh gave the lead back to Team QMJHL at 3:14 in the second period after beating Garipov with a hard slap shot, but the lead would again be very short lived. Nikita Dvurechensky registered back-to-back goals before the midway point of the second frame to give the Russians a 3-2 lead. Head coach André Tournigny took the opportunity to make a change in goal, bringing in Quebec Remparts netminder Louis Domingue.
Early in the third period, Brandon Gormley tied it up at three apiece with a nifty shot from the slot. Artemiy Panarin had no trouble burying a beautiful pass from teammate Denis Golubev that literally crossed Domingue’s creased to give the Russians a 4-3 lead.
Hometown hero and QMJHL Captain Sean Couturier was named Player of the Game with two assists while Nikita Dvurechensky claimed the honours for Russia with two goals.
Game three of the SUBWAY Super Series goes tomorrow night as Team OHL welcomes Team Russia in London, ON. The game will be broadcast live on Rogers Sportsnet One starting at 7 pm as is also available live at www.sportsnet.ca.
