Day 2 at WU17 Recap

Dawson Creek/Fort St. John, BC – Day two of the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge saw a pair of Canadian victories while the United States and Finland also secured wins. The six day tournament being held in Dawson Creen and Fort St. John, BC features the top 16 year-old talent from across the globe.
Here’s a look at Monday’s action.
CANADA BLACK 4 — CZECH REPUBLIC 3 SO
Shootout goals from Arnaud Durandeau (Halifax Mooseheads) and Jake Leschyshyn (Regina Pats) led Canada Black to a narrow 4-3 six round shootout win over the Czech Republic.
Canada Black trailed 3-2 after 40 minutes before defenceman Jocktan Chainey (Shawinigan Cataractes) knotted the score at three with 3:55 remaining in the third period to force overtime.
Leschyshyn and Michael Rasmussen (Tri-City Americans) also scored for Canada who skated to victory despite being outshot 32-18. Saint John Sea Dogs draft selection Alex D’Orio (Magog Cantonniers, QMAAA) made 29 saves in the win.
“It is a team effort. Yes, I scored the winning goal, but D’Orio kept us in the game with many big saves,” said Leschyshyn after the win. “I feel we won this as a team and this is what matters.”

CANADA RED 4 — SWEDEN 1
Canada Red got out to a 3-0 lead after 20 minutes and never looked back as Antoine Morand (Acadie-Bathurst Titan) scored twice in a 4-1 victory over Sweden.
Defenceman Josh Brook (Moose Jaw Warriors) and forward Joel Teasdale (Blainville-Boisbriand Armada) also scored for Canada Red who improves to 2-0 with the victory.
Goaltender Michael DiPietro (Windsor Spitfires) turned aside 23 of the 24 shots he faced.
“It’s about winning the most games that we can and playing the Canadian Way,” noted Morand. “We want to finish first. My teammates did a great job on my two goals, and when we’re all playing well the success just comes.”

UNITED STATES 7 — CANADA WHITE 5
Red Deer Rebels draft selection Grant Mismash scored twice as the United States outpaced Canada White in a 7-5 decision.
The United States led 4-2 after a high scoring first period before Canada eventually stormed back to draw within a goal late in the third frame on a goal and an assist from Gabriel Vilardi (Windsor Spitfires) and along with four helpers from defenceman Evan Bouchard (London Knights).
Owen Tippett (Mississauga Steelheads), Ian Mitchell (Spruce Grove Saints, AJHL), Louis-Filip Cote (Rouyn-Noranda Huskies) and Greg Meireles (Kitchener Rangers) also scored in the loss.
“I am proud of my team; they never give up and we stayed in the game,” said Canada White head coach Scott Walker. “They are proud to wear the jersey and showed character. Now we just have to win tomorrow.”

FINLAND 6 — RUSSIA 3
Eeli Tolvanen and Jesse Koskenkorva both scored twice as Finland doubled up Russia 6-3.
Joni Ikonen and Aatu Luusuaniemi chipped in with a pair of assists each while goaltender Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen made 28 saves.
Russia had goals from Yaroslav Alekseev, Vladilslav Kazamanov and Klim Kostin in the loss.
