Winterhawks’ Nicolas Petan Named CHL Player of the Week
Toronto, ON – The Canadian Hockey League today announced that league Top Scorer Nicolas Petan of the Portland Winterhawks is the CHL Player of the Week for the final week of the 2012-13 regular season ending March 17, after collecting nine points including one goal and eight assists in three games with a plus-minus rating of plus-5.
Petan’s nine points last week brought his season total to 120 and secured a tie for first in the CHL scoring race with teammate Brendan Leipsic. Petan picked up an assist last Tuesday night in a 4-1 win over the Victoria Royals, then grabbed another three assists Friday as third star of an 8-4 victory over the Seattle Thunderbirds. Petan wrapped up his week recording his first career five-point game with a goal and four assists as part of a 6-5 shootout win Saturday over the Thunderbirds. The Winterhawks also played Sunday earning a 6-1 win over the Spokane Chiefs to close out the regular season schedule with an overall record of 57-12-1-2 for 117 points claiming the WHL’s Scotty Munro Trophy for having the league’s best regular season record.
Petan, a 17-year-old from Delta, BC, is playing in his second full WHL season . Eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft, Petan was ranked 34 by NHL Central Scouting in their midterm rankings. He finished the season with 46 goals and 74 assists for 120 points in 71 games.
Also considered for the award this week was QMJHL Top Scorer Ben Duffy of the PEI Rocket who scored four goals and five assists for nine points in three games to finish the season with 110 points and tied for third in overall CHL scoring. OHL Top Scorer Vince Trocheck of the Plymouth Whalers was also considered after scoring twice with six assists for eight points in three games to finish the season with 109 points which has him ranked fifth overall in CHL scoring.
