Wildcats Duo Sweep CHL Awards
The Moncton Wildcats extended their winning streak to eight games last week on the strength of outstanding performances by CHL Player of the Week Dmitrij Jaskin and Vaughn CHL Goaltender of the Week Alex Dubeau.
Jaskin led the offensive charge for the Wildcats with seven goals and four assists and extended his personal point-streak to 11 games. He collected multi-point efforts in all four games last week beginning Wednesday with one goal and two assists as third star of a 6-1 win over the P.E.I. Rocket. He followed that up by claiming first star honours in three straight games including Friday night with two goals and one assist in a 5-0 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan, Saturday with a goal and an assist in a 4-2 win over the Titan, and Sunday when he recorded his first career hat-trick as part of a 6-2 win over the Quebec Remparts.
Dubeau was equally impressive in between the pipes for the Wildcats posting a 3-0-0-0 record with a shutout victory and a goals-against-average of 1.00 and save percentage of .962. He stopped 76 shots in his three starts highlighted by his league-leading fourth shutout of the season on Friday night making 21 saves in a 5-0 win over the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. Earlier in the week he made 26 saves as second star of a 6-1 victory over the P.E.I. Rocket before closing out the week Sunday with a 29-save performance as part of a 6-2 win over the Quebec Remparts.
Jaskin, a 19-year-old born in Omsk, Russia, is playing in his first QMJHL season with the Wildcats. Selected in the second round of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues, Jaskin is currently third in QMJHL scoring with 35 goals and 40 assists for 75 points in just 39 games.
Dubeau, an 18-year-old from Mascouche, Quebec, is playing in his third QMJHL season but first with the Wildcats after competing two seasons with the MasterCard Memorial Cup champion Shawinigan Cataractes. He currently holds a 23-12-1-0 record with the Wildcats with a goals-against-average of 2.80 and save percentage of .893.
