WHL HEADLINES – Thursday Recap

HITMEN DOWN ICE IN SHOOT-OUT – The Calgary Hitmen (3-0-0-0) kept up their perfect early-season record as they managed a 3-2 shoot-out victory over the visiting Kootenay Ice (2-0-0-1) in the lone Western Hockey League contest on Thursday, September 29th.

rRiley Merkley and Fredrik Pettersson scored in regulation for the Hitmen, and then each tallied in the shoot-out to lift Calgary to the victory. Netminder Justin Pogge (pictured) stopped 23 of 25 shots in regulation time for the Hitmen and denied two of Kootenay’s three shooters in the shoot-out to grab his third victory of the season.

rSteven DaSilva and Brett Sutter – with his third in three games – scored for Kootenay while Ryan Russell was the lone Ice player to beat Pogge in the shoot-out. Rookie netminder Kris Lazaruk turned in a solid 33-save performance in regulation, but was beaten twice in the shoot-out for the loss.
