Wheat Kings goals leader Nguyen commits to University of Nebraska Omaha
Brandon Wheat Kings alternate captain Marcus Nguyen has announced his commitment to the University of Nebraska Omaha.
The 20-year-old is expected to join the Mavericks for the 2025-26 season upon the conclusion of his WHL eligibility.
“I’m excited to announce that I’ve officially committed to the University of Nebraska Omaha to play Division 1 Hockey,” Nguyen said on social media. “I am super grateful for the opportunity and want to thank everyone who has helped along the way!”
Nguyen, a 5-foot-10, 182-pound winger, has 15 goals (including one game-winner and a shorthanded tally) and 16 assists for a team-leading 31 points in 29 games.
The Calgary, Alta. product was originally drafted by the Portland Winterhawks in the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft and played four seasons in the Rose City before being acquired by Brandon in an offseason trade.
“This is a big milestone for Marcus and for our organization,” said Marty Murray, Wheat Kings General Manager and Head Coach. “Marcus has worked incredibly hard to get to this point, and we are excited to see him take the next step in his hockey career. His commitment to Nebraska Omaha is a testament to his work ethic, character, and love for the game.”
Nguyen is closing in on several career milestones with 85 goals and 90 assists for 175 points in 245 regular-season games.
“We couldn’t be more proud of Marcus and the impact he’s had on our team,” said Wheat Kings Owner and Governor Jared Jacobson. “His commitment to Nebraska Omaha is a great achievement, and we’re excited to watch him continue to grow as a player. It’s an exciting time for both Marcus and the Wheat Kings.”
He played a key role in Portland’s run to the 2024 WHL Championship series and finished second on the team in scoring (8G-9A-17PTS) behind Detroit Red Wings prospect Nate Danielson.
He notably scored a hat trick in Game 3 of the Western Conference Championship and followed it up with the game-winning goal in Game 4 against the powerhouse Prince George Cougars.
Brandon (15-9-3-2) sits third in the East Division entering the holiday break.
The Wheat Kings return to action against the Regina Pats (8-17-4-2) on Friday, December 27 at Westoba Place.
