Oil Kings netminder Hay named Giuseppe WHL Goaltender of the Week
Calgary, Alta. – The Western Hockey League announced today that Edmonton Oil Kings netminder Kolby Hay has been named Giuseppe WHL Goaltender of the Week for the week ending March 10, 2024.
Hay posted a 1-0-0-1 record against two of the hottest teams in the WHL, recording a 1.96 goals-against average and a .938 save percentage while facing 30 or more shots in both contests.
The 6-foot-4.5 foot, 185-pound netminder was first called to action against the Prince Albert Raiders on March 8. With the match tied 1-1 in the second period, Hay stretched out to deny Ryder Ritchie on a cross-ice feed for one of the top saves of the night. He’d hold the Raiders scoreless on their three powerplays and stop 28 of 30 shots to help Edmonton to a 3-2 overtime victory, earning second star of the night.
Hay faced an even tougher task in the second half of back-to-back games, facing down the league-leading Saskatoon Blades. The 19-year-old stopped a formidable Rowan Calvert shot off the rush and managed to sprawl and freeze the rebound. The Oil Kings didn’t allow a single goal on Saskatoon’s five powerplays in regulation time. However, a penalty shot from Toronto Maple Leafs prospect Brandon Lisowsky in overtime would stand as the game-winner. Hay would be named second star once again with a 32-save effort.
Hay sports a career-best 19-17-1-1 record with one shutout, a 3.85 goals-against average and .887 save percentage in his second season as the starter for the rebuilding Oil Kings.
As a rookie, Hay backed up Detroit Red Wings prospect Sebastian Cossa for Edmonton’s Championship run in 2021-22.
The Monte Creek, B.C. product was selected by the Oil Kings in the third round, 62nd overall in the 2019 WHL Prospects Draft.
Edmonton (23-36-3-1) travels south for a Central Division showdown against Lethbridge (30-27-5-0) on March 13 at 7:00 p.m. MST.
