Giants welcome Manny Viveiros as new head coach
The Vancouver Giants have introduced Manny Viveiros as the Club’s new head coach.
Viveiros returns to the WHL after a three-year stint as head coach of the Henderson Silver Knights of the American Hockey League; he previously held WHL head coaching positions with the Swift Current Broncos and Spokane Chiefs, winning a WHL Championship with the Broncos in 2018.
He holds a career .663 points percentage as a WHL head coach, earning 121 wins from his 199 regular season games behind the bench, earning the Dunc McCallum Memorial Trophy as WHL Coach of the Year with Swift Current in 2018.
“Manny is someone we are really excited to get,” Giants general manager Barclay Parneta commented. “The experience and the level that he has coached at lends well to this. He has been in the NHL; he has been in the AHL; he has been in the WHL. He is a person that has won championships, he is a person that has competed on the national stage and he is a person that has the communication skills that are so important to today’s athlete.”
“I’d like to thank Ron Toigo, Pete Toigo, Barclay Parneta, and the entire Vancouver Giants organization for having the faith and the trust to welcome me back to the Western Hockey League,” Viveiros said. “I truly believe Vancouver is one of the premier franchises in all of the CHL and I’m really excited to be here.”
As a player, Viveiros skated in the WHL with the Prince Albert Raiders for four seasons from 1982-83 through 1985-86, amassing 321 regular season points from his 251 games played.
He helped the Raiders capture the WHL Championship and Memorial Cup in 1985, and was named the WHL East Division Defenceman of the Year and Player of the Year in 1986.
His professional hockey career spanned three decades and included 29 NHL contests with the Minnesota North Stars.
Internationally, Viveiros represented Canada at the 1986 IIHF World Junior Championship and Austria at the 2005 IIHF World Championship.
With the Giants, Viveiros succeeds Michael Dyck, who earlier this summer accepted a position with the AHL’s Toronto Marlies.
The Vancouver Giants are absolutely thrilled to name Manny Viveiros the ninth Head Coach in franchise history.
