City of Red Deer Wraps Up 98th Edition of the MasterCard Memorial Cup
The 98th edition of the MasterCard Memorial Cup concluded on Sunday as the OHL Champion London Knights beat the QMJHL Champion Rouyn-Noranda Huskies by a score of 3-2 in overtime to claim their second Memorial Cup title in franchise history.
Hosted by the Rebels and the City of Red Deer, it marked the first time in 42 years that the MasterCard Memorial Cup was held in the province of Alberta.
For hockey fans across the country, this truly marked a special occasion to have the event held in a thriving hockey community. It all began with the arrival of the MasterCard Memorial Cup on May 19th when it arrived at Canotaph Plaza via helicopter to fans galore seeking to get a glimpse of the historic trophy. Fan Fest at the ENMAX Centrium was a success as many activities took place for fans of all ages including games, the Hockey Hall of Fame, concerts, displays and more. Furthermore, notable WHL Alumni such as Lanny McDonald and Darcy Tucker conducted meet and greets with fans as part of the festivities.
Fans, media and more took to social media to display their gratitude to the Red Deer Rebels, the City of Red Deer, the host committee and all staff and volunteers that made the event a huge success.
