LONGO’S LAST MINUTE HERIOCS HELP TIGERS WIN 5-3
Medicine Hat, AB — The Medicine Hat Tigers scored two late goals to defeat the Swift Current Broncos 5-3 on Saturday night.
The Tigers scored three times in the first period but the Broncos made a comeback to tie the game up 3-3 midway through the 3rd period. Luckily for the Tabbies blueliner, Trevor Longo fired a shot in from the point to regain the lead with 52.6 seconds left on the clock. Captain James Hamblin added an empty-net goal with 19 seconds left to play to secure the victory.
Nick McCarry scored his first career WHL goal 2:37 into the game to open the scoring. McCarry picked up a rebound in the slot and did not hesitate to fire it into the net. His first career goal was assisted by Elijah Brown and Linus Nässén.
Shortly after McCarry’s goal on a rush up the ice, Dylan MacPherson picked up his own rebound and flipped it over the pad of Broncos’ goaltender Isaac Poulter to score his second goal of the season, unassisted.
Late in the opening frame, Brown sent Brett Kemp a cross-ice pass and Kemp scored his 25th goal of the season. Longo also assisted on the play.
Broncos forward Owen Blocker scored in the second stanza to start the Swift Current comeback.
Midway through the final frame, Ethan O’Rourke and Connor Horning scored to tie the game up 3-3. Horning’s goal was on the Broncos power play.
With less than a minute to play Longo and Hamblin scored to ensure the Tigers’ 5-3 victory.
Jordan Hollett made 23 saves on 26 shots faced while Broncos’ Poulter stopped 39 of the Tigers’ 44 shots.
The Orange and Black are now 26-16-2-2 and will travel to Red Deer on Friday to faceoff with the Rebels. Saturday the Tabbies will return home to host the Moose Jaw Warriors.
