The North Battleford, Saskatchewan, native played minor-league hockey in North America before he had stints as player in Sweden, the Netherlands, Germany and Austria.
He started his coaching career in 1988-89 with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the Western Hockey League, spending two years with the Tigers. In his first year behind the Tigers bench, Kennedy lead the Tigers to a 41 win season.

During his time in Berlin and Villach, Kennedy was also head coach of the Austrian national team from 1996 to 2002.
