Daine Todd to join University of New Brunswick V-Reds Hockey Roster
Fredericton, NB — 2008 Canadian National Finalists – the UNB Varsity Reds would like to announce that Daine Todd of the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL has announced his intentions to join the Varsity Reds for the upcoming 2008-2009 season.
The 5’10, 170 lb Todd has played his entire WHL career in Medicine Hat under highly respected head coach Willie Desjardins. He was team captain this past year and posted a career best 25G – 40A- 65 pts in 70 GP. Last season, Todd missed the majority of the regular season with injury but played a key role in play-offs – 7-8-15 pts in helping the Tigers win the WHL Championship. Medicine Hat went on to participate in the Memorial Cup and were the Canadian finalists with Todd again being a key offensive threat. He will be the sixth Varsity Red recruit in recent years that has been to the Memorial Cup Final joining Josh Hepditch (Moncton), Derek Yeomans (Kelowna), Colin Sinclair (Kootenay), Robert Pearce (Quebec) and Nathan O’Nabigon (Kitchener ) .
Head Coach Gardiner Mac Dougall was very excited about the addition of Todd to the Varsity Reds roster. “He is a top quality recruit who is one of the premier overage players in the WHL. He has a great skill set, top notch speed and should make a quick transition to our style of play here at UNB. He has been in a top notch program in Medicine Hat and should be an immediate positive difference- maker for our hockey program. He has had many opportunities at the pro level but is looking to develop his game here at UNB and eventually join the Boyces and Hennigars who have used the program as a stepping stone to the AHL & NHL.”
The native of Red Deer, Alberta will study Business Administration & will be the fourth current Alberta resident on the team including rookie sensations Kyle Bailey, Derek Yeomans and Alex Aldred. The Varsity Reds have had an excellent track record of attracting top notch WHL players to their line–up and have had 14 Alberta players in the UNB line-up since Mac Dougall has taken over the program in 2001.
The Varsity Reds had a record breaking 2007-08 season with a 43-4-1 record and will kick off their 2008-09 season on September 24th when they play host to the New York Islanders rookie squad at the Aitken Centre in Fredericton. Last year. UNB defeated the Islanders by a score of 3-1.
