VANCOUVER, BC – Josh Winquist recorded his first career hat trick and Daniel Cotton earned his second career shutout as the Everett Silvertips blanked the Vancouver Giants 4-0 Sunday afternoon at Pacific Coliseum. The win was Everett’s 20th of the season and gave the ‘Tips a three-in-three weekend sweep for the first time since January 2011 as they improved to 5-0 against Vancouver this season.
Josh Winquist figured in on all four Everett goals, scoring three and assisting on the fourth. Posting two assists in the win were Manraj Hayer (who was playing in his hometown on his 20th birthday) and Landon Oslanski (who surpassed 100 points in his WHL career). Mirco Mueller scored the other Silvertips goal and Daniel Cotton (9-10-0-0) did the rest, stopping all 31 shots he faced to shut out the Giants for the second time this season.
The teams combined for 21 first period shots, including 11 for the Giants, but it was Everett that had the better chances. The ‘Tips opened the scoring late in the opening frame as Landon’s Oslanski’s point blast changed direction in front and caromed right to Josh Winquist, who deposited his 19th goal of the year to put the Silvertips up 1-0 after one.
The Silvertips added to the lead midway through the second period on their second powerplay of the game. Mirco Mueller’s slapshot from the point found its way through traffic and into the top corner of Payton Lee’s net at 9:04 of the middle stanza to put Everett on top 2-0. Vancouver outshot the ‘Tips by one again in the second, but couldn’t find the twine to reduce their deficit.
Winquist’s second goal came early in the third period after Hayer fed Tyler Sandhu, who centered a pass between the circles for a one-time finish just 53 seconds in. He then completed the hat trick on another powerplay midway through the period, roofing a shot into the net from in tight after Oslanski, Reid Petryk and Hayer combined to get him the puck beside the goal crease. Cotton preserved the shutout with his biggest saves of the game on a late Vancouver powerplay as the Silvertips completed the 4-0 win.
Everett scored twice on five powerplay chances while holding Vancouver scoreless on six opportunities with another solid penalty killing effort. Payton Lee (7-15-0-0) took the loss in goal with 18 saves as the Giants outshot the ‘Tips 31-22.
