Vancouver Bests Tips in Everett
EVERETT, WA – The Vancouver Giants scored the final three goals of the game in a 4-2 preseason victory over the Everett Silvertips Friday night at Comcast Arena. The Silvertips exhibition mark drops to 2-4 going into their exhibition finale Saturday night against the Seattle Thunderbirds at ShoWare Center.
Jesse Mychan and Nick Walters scored goals for the Silvertips, while Luke Siemens stopped 32 shots in his first complete game of the preseason. The ‘Tips were outshot 36-19 in the contest, but held a 2-1 lead midway through the second frame before Vancouver potted three unanswered goals to earn the win.
The Giants jumped out to a big shot advantage early in the game and opened the scoring on Dalton Sward’s powerplay goal at 6:12 of the opening period. Still being heavily outshot late in the first, Everett tied it on their second shot of the night when Mychan buried a nice centering feed from Jari Erricson to make it 1-1 through 20 minutes.
The ‘Tips then took their first lead of the night when Nick Walters drove the net and backhanded the puck off a Vancouver defender and past goaltender Brendan Jensen for a powerplay goal less than four minutes into the second frame. The Giants tied it at two midway through the period however, as Jackson Houck re-directed a long point shot to knot the score once again heading into the third.
After the teams remained locked at two for most of the final period, Sward put the visitors ahead to stay with just over five minutes remaining on his second tally of the night. Vancouver then tacked on another powerplay goal during a 5-on-3 advantage just over a minute later to complete the scoring in a 4-2 win.
Luke Siemens played all 60 minutes while taking the loss despite the 32 stops. Brendan Jensen faced only 19 shots, finishing with 17 saves. The Silvertips scored once on five powerplay chances and killed off seven of nine Vancouver opportunities.
The Silvertips will now travel to Kent, Washington for their preseason finale Saturday night at 7:05 pm against the Seattle Thunderbirds. Everett has already faced the T-Birds twice so far in the preseason, going 1-1 in those games.
The Silvertips are set to open the home schedule of their ninth season in Everett on Saturday, September 24 against the Kelowna Rockets at Comcast Arena.
