Hockey Day In Canada will come to Victoria on January 20th, 2024
All seven Canadian NHL teams and the Royals will be in action
The City of Victoria has been announced as the host for 2024 Hockey Day in Canada. The marathon of a day will take place on January 20, 2024 at Ship Point in the Inner Harbour. All seven Canadian NHL teams will be in action across the country with Victoria being the central hub for the broadcast. The Victoria Royals will also be in action at the Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre on the Saturday night.
“This event will bring vibrancy into our downtown core over a period of four to five days with celebrations and activities. It will bring all members of the community together and showcase to our nation what a fantastic city Victoria is to live, visit, work and of course play.” Said John Wilson, President/CEO of the Wilson’s Group of Companies/Chair of Victoria Hockey Legacy Society.
There will be a variety of other events taking place throughout the week in Victoria including school visits and hockey camps for kids, NHL Alumni/Celebrity game taking place at the SOFMC, banquet hosted by Sportsnet commentators with a hot stove including NHL Alumni, as well as a night of music at the harbour featuring local music written about the game of hockey.
A traditional welcoming from the Songhees and Esquimalt Nation will kick off Saturday as they paddle the Stanley Cup into the Victoria harbour.
A synthetic ice rink will also be showcased from Can-Ice International with sustainability in mind as it will be set up for the entirety of the week for spectators and community groups able to enjoy.
“We want to work as hard as possible leading up to the event and throughout the event to strengthen the ties to the community while being an active participant in the event while growing the game of hockey.” Said Royals General Manager and Head Coach, Dan Price.
While the event is focused on Hockey, there will also be a large component of Mental Health Awareness. The Courtnall Society for Mental Health will continue to raise funds and support for their society as an official partner of Hockey Day in Canada.
Established in 2021, The Courtnall Society for Mental Health works to promote the understanding of mental health through awareness, education, and resources. The Society is dedicated to raising funds year-round in order to provide grants to support community-centric mental health organizations across Canada.
“The Arch Courtnall Centre has really made a difference for Victoria and this community. Now we continue to raise money for awareness and help all different kinds of causes around Canada.” Said Geoff Courtnall, Executive Vice President, Courtnall Society for Mental Health.
