Royals fall short in Brandon
Brandon, MB. — The Victoria Royals kicked off the Eastern Conference road swing tonight, facing off against the Brandon Wheat Kings at Assiniboine Credit Union Place. After 60 minutes of hard-fought hockey in Manitoba, the Royals fell short 6-1.
The Wheat Kings opened the scoring with a goal from Jaxon Jacobson at 11:36 of the first period, and doubled their lead with a goal from Gunnar Gleasman just under two minutes later. Heath Nelson got the Royals on the board with a power play marker at 16:49 of the frame, assisted by Caleb Matthews and Cosmo Wilson. The Royals were unable to convert on a late-period power play, and trailed the Wheat Kings 2-1 headed into the first intermission.
Brandon opened up the second frame with a pair of goals from Joby Baumuller and Caleb Hadland at 4:15 and 5:10 respectively. At 8:24 Jaxon Jacobson extended Brandons lead to 5-1. Luke Mistelbacher closed out the scoring with 11:41 left in the period.
Despite outshooting the Wheat Kings 10-4 through the third period, the Royals could not take advantage of an extended power play late in the frame and fell with a final score of 6-1.
