WINTERHAWKS DOWN CHIEFS IN GAME FIVE – Sven Bartschi scored and set up two more to lead the Portland Winterhawks to a 3-2 victory over the visiting Spokane Chiefs in Game 5 of the Kal Tire WHL Western Conference Championship series in WHL playoff action on Saturday night.
Craig Cunningham’s sixth goal of the playoffs 11:47 into the third period turned out to be the game-winner for the Hawks, who scored twice in the final frame en route to taking a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven series, while Ty Rattie picked up a goal and an assist in the win.
Tyler Johnson and Mitch Holmberg scored for the Chiefs, who fall to 5-3 on the road in the 2011 WHL playoffs.
Mac Carruth turned aside 39 of 41 shots fired his way to post his 16th career playoff win for the Winterhawks.
James Reid made 40 saves in the loss for Spokane.
The Chiefs host the Winterhawks for Game 6 of the best-of-seven series on Monday in Spokane, WA.
