Raiders Fall in Overtime to Wheat Kings in Brandon
Brandon, MB – The Prince Albert Raiders (2-6-1-2) picked up a point for the third straight game but fell 5-4 in overtime to the Brandon Wheat Kings (8-3-0-0) at Assiniboine Credit Union Place on Sunday.
Alisher Sarkenov had two goals and an assist to pace the Raiders. Brandon Gorzynski had a goal and an assist, while Brock Cripps and Eli Molde chipped in a pair of assists each. Malaki Martin also scored for the Raiders.
Sarkenov got the Raiders on the board midway through the first period. The import forward pounced on a puck in the slot, spun and fired a shot past Filip Ruzicka for his fifth marker of the campaign.
Steele Bass was up to the task when tested in the first period. He denied Brady Turko’s attempt on a two-on-one rush, then turned aside Wheat Kings leading scorer Kris Muissu with a shoulder save.
The Raiders added to their lead at the 8:26 mark of the second period. Martin intercepted a pass in the neutral zone and carried it into the offensive zone. He deked through Nigel Boehm and lifted a backhander over Ruzicka to tally his first in the WHL, putting the Raiders ahead 2-0.
Brandon cut into the Raiders’ lead on the power play with 6:03 to play in the middle frame. Jaxon Jacobson collected the puck in his own end and carried it the length of the ice. He beat the defender to the outside and his backhand attempt found its way through Bass to make it 2-1.
Just 21 seconds into the third period, the Raiders extended their lead. Cripps’ shot from the point found Molde at the side of the goal, who threw it in front of the net. The pass found Sarkenov in the slot and his shot beat Ruzicka for his second of the game and sixth of the year.
About two minutes later, the Raiders struck again off the initial faceoff of a power play. Sarkenov won the draw back to Cripps. He set up Gorzynski with a one-timer at the right faceoff circle and the Dallas Stars prospect blasted a shot past Ruzicka for his third goal of the year.
Jacobson tallied his second goal of the game to cut the lead in half at the 4:34 mark of the period. He was left alone at the top of the crease and the Wheat Kings captain went off the far post and in.
Three minutes later, Brett Wilson collected a rebound behind the goal after a high shot. He found Joby Baumuller on the doorstep and the Wheat Kings forward made no mistake to make it a 4-3 game.
With 3:39 left in the third, the Wheat Kings tied it up as Jacobson completed his hat trick. He made a move around a Raiders defender at the left post and slid the puck off the right post and past Bass to tie things up and send the game to overtime.
In the overtime period, the Wheat Kings capitalized on a two-on-one rush. Baumuller’s pass sent Cruz Jim in behind the Raiders defence and the Wheat Kings defenceman beat Bass to give the Wheat Kings the 5-4 win.
Bass finished the game with 31 saves in the loss. Ruzicka stopped 34 shots for the Wheat Kings.
The Raiders are back in action on Friday night when the Everett Silvertips visit the Art Hauser Centre. Puck drop is 7 p.m. Tickets are available at the Raiders Office or at sasktix.ca.
