Hurricanes This Week: September 29th
The week that was: It was a tough afternoon for the Lethbridge Hurricanes who faced the Calgary Hitmen in their lone game of the week. The Hitmen opened up a 4-nothing lead after the first period and added 3 more in the second and 2 more in the third. The Hurricanes finally broke Mack Shields’ shutout bid at the 1:32 mark of the 3rd period when former Calgary Hitmen Zane Jones buried his 1st of the season and first as a Hurricane. Jones would be awarded a penalty shot later in the period and would find the back of the net to complete the scoring for the Hurricanes. Lethbridge was outshot 45-20 and finished the night 0/5 on the PP while Calgary was 1/4. Starting goalie Zac Robidoux made 10 saves on 14 shots, Stuart Skinner played the final 40 minutes and stopped 26 of the 31 shots he faced in the game.
Looking ahead:
Wednesday, October 1st, 7:00pm – The Hurricanes and Calgary Hitmen meet again, this time at the ENMAX Centre in this back end of the home and home series. Calgary already took their first meeting by a 9-2 score. In 2013-2014, the Hitmen swept the six game season series, outscoring the Hurricanes 34-15 along the way.
Friday, October 3rd, 7:00pm – Friday marks the first of three meetings this season between the Hurricanes and Kamloops Blazers. Like Lethbridge who struggled to just 12 wins in 2013-2014, Kamloops also struggled finishing the season with 14 wins, but they did win both matchups. On October 14th, the Blazers skated to a 7-1 in and on January 22nd, they defeated the Hurricanes by that same 7-1 score. The Hurricanes were outshot 77-58 and were 2/8 on the PP in the series while Kamloops was 4/8. Giorgio Estephan led the way with 2 goals, while Tyler Wong and Riley Sheen both added an assist.
