Hurricanes Drop 3-1 Decision in Red Deer to Rebels
Red Deer, AB – The Lethbridge Hurricanes opened a two-game road trip on Saturday with a 3-1 loss to the Red Deer Rebels at Peavey Mart Centrium.
The Hurricanes has another good start to the game as they had the Rebels pinned in their own zone early but couldn’t get on the board. Red Deer got into penalty trouble as the ‘Canes had four power play opportunities in the opening period but could not strike with the man advantage. Lethbridge eventually opened the scoring while four-on-four when Brayden Edwards tapped home his team-leading fourth goal of the season at the 13:23 mark to make it 1-0 Hurricanes; Joe Arntsen and Noah Chadwick earned the assists on the goal. The Hurricanes outshot the Rebels 12-7 in the opening frame.
Red Deer answered early in the second period on a partial odd-man rush, Ollie Josephson swatted home a rebound passed Harrison Meneghin to make it a 1-1 tie just 4:09 into the middle frame. The Rebels struck again just 1:49 later as Talon Brigley scored his second goal of the season on a deflection to give Red Deer their first lead of the game; Josephson and Elias Carmichael were credited with the assists on the goal. Lethbridge held the edge in shots 11-8 in the middle frame.
In the third period, the Hurricanes were outshot 14-11 but generated some good looks to try to tie the game. Roughly five minutes into the period, Tristen Doyle wired a shot from the left circle that hit the goal post and stayed out keeping Red Deer in front 2-1. The Rebels added an insurance goal with 2:45 left in regulation when Frantisek Formanek buried a rebound for his first goal of the season to make it a 3-1 game after Meneghin stopped Kai Uchacz on a breakaway. The Hurricanes pulled the goaltender for the extra attacker at the end of the game, combined with a pair of late power plays with less than a minute remaining, but the ‘Canes could not solve Kyle Kelsey who steered home a 3-1 victory for the Rebels.
Lethbridge outshot Red Deer 34-29 in the game – the ‘Canes have recorded 30-or-more shots in every game so far this season. The Hurricanes were 0/6 on the power play while the Rebels went 0/4 with the extra man.

The loss for the Hurricanes was their second straight road defeat as their road record falls to 2-2-0-0 on the season. Lethbridge’s overall record slips to 4-2-0-0 through the first six games of the regular season.
